This character is a combination of 亻and 木 mù, in earlier articles we have explained that 亻stands for single person, see the description in character 信. the right part is 木 which means tree or wood. it picture a person leaning against a tree, therefore the original meaning of this character is rest. later it was extended to mean "stop", as in 争论不休 zhēng lùn bù xiū(argue without stop). from the meaning stop, it was borrowed to mean "do not", as in 休想 xiū xiǎng(do not think forever).
