取 is an associative compound character. on the left side it is another Chinese character 耳, on the right side is another character 又 yòu, from the shape of 又, it seems like a hand will grasp something. therefore the whole character 取 seems like somebody use his hand to grasp other ear. as in ancient China, the war prisoners would have their left ears to be lopped off as testimony to their military exploits, so the original meaning of 取 was "to cut off the left ear"; from this the character was also extended to express the present meaning "take", "get" or "fetch".
